On the afternoon of December 24, Christmas Eve, a firefighter with the Hagerstown Fire Department suffered serious leg injuries.
According to the Hagerstown Fire Department, the accident happened at around 4.30 p.m. when the firefighter, who has not been named, was responding to a a house fire in the 13100 block of Orchid Drive.
He was with the second crew which arrived at the scene, and he was the operator of Hagerstown’s Engine 2. He was working to connect a supply line to a fire hydrant, but the line, which has a heavy piece of metal at one end, unwrapped itself very quickly from the hydrant and fractured both of his legs. He fell onto a grassy area and was not further injured.
He was transported to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, where he underwent surgery and it is thought he will now need a second procedure.
